Germany is to issue the world's first driverless law allowing the L4 class on roads

2021-05-28

According to overseas media reports, the German Bundestag has passed a draft law on autonomous driving, which will be submitted to the German Federal Council for approval on May 28, 2021.
Upon approval by the Federal Council, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany will issue and publish it in the Federal Gazette.
After approval from the Federal Council, Germany will become the first country in the world to allow driverless vehicles to be used in daily traffic on a nationwide basis.
Starting in 2022, the country will allow self-driving cars (L4 class) on public roads as well as in designated areas.
In the future, self-driving cars should be able to operate completely autonomously in certain areas of the country's public roads, without the supervision of human drivers or safety officers, according to the bill.
However, the government should take further measures to actively implement autonomous driving vehicles and their supporting industries in urban construction, and make full use of the potential of these products and services, so that they can not only serve the society, but also let the society participate in promoting the development of technology.
Specific L4 level unmanned vehicle application scenarios include: shuttle traffic;
Passenger vehicles (buses that travel along designated routes);
Hub2Hub transportation (e.g. between two distribution centers);
Non-peak transport demand;
The first/last kilometre of transport of people and/or goods;
"Dual mode vehicles," such as automated valet parking (AVP).
